French Nuclear Testing

Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of what Pacific forums the UK Government are a member; and if he will list for each one the position they have taken on French nuclear tests in the Pacific and specify Her Majesty's Government's position on that decision. [34151]

The United Kingdom is a member of the South Pacific commission, which has not taken a position on the resumption of French nuclear testing.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what dependent territories the United Kingdom has in the Pacific; how far these are from Muroroa; what views have been expressed by the Governments on French nuclear testing; and how these views will be transmitted to the French Government. [34154]

Mr. Davis

Pitcairn is the only UK dependent territory in the South Pacific. It is approximately 900 km from Mururoa. The island council has not expressed an opinion on the resumption of French nuclear testing.
