asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many inmates were held in each local prison on 1 July 1995; what was the Certified Normal Accommodation of each establishment; and what was the percentage of overcrowding.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Lady Blatch has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of prisoners held in each local prison on 1 July, the certified normal accommodation of each establishment, and the percentage overcrowding on that date.
