§ Mr. FreemanIn 1993–94, my Department paid approximately £19 million to 34 voluntary sector organisations or bodies through grants for services related to welfare work for the armed forces and their families, and in the area of education and training. In addition to this it paid approximately £900,000 towards the cost of running organisations such as help, information, volunteer exchanges-HIVES-and homestart bureaux at numerous armed forces' bases in the United Kingdom and abroad.
For 1994–95, the figures were approximately £18 million to 34 organisations and £1 million to bureaux.
