HC Deb 04 July 1995 vol 263 cc126-7W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the number of rams who are electro-stimulated each year to obtain semen; and what is the limit on the number of times each ram can receive these electrical charges in a given period. [31125]

Mrs. Browning

Electro-ejaculation of rams is used only rarely and may be carried out only by a veterinary surgeon. The technique is used for diagnostic or research purposes—for example, to diagnose infertility or for the assessment of fertility prior to the breeding season. It is not used for the routine collection of semen.
