The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the cost of refurbishing prisons as a result of damage caused by prisoners acting unlawfully for each year since 1990.The total costs for refurbishing establishments damaged by prisoners in each financial year since 1990/1, for which figures are available, are as follows:
- 1990–91: £27.9 million
- 1991–92: £512,000
- 1992–93: £464,000
- 1993–94: £5,072,000
- 1994–95: £135,000*
- *Costs for the current financial year to date.
