To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many suicides there were in prisons in each year since 1990.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General for the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your Question about suicides in prison.

Table one below gives the number of self-inflicted deaths in prisons in England and Wales for the years 1990 to 1994 inclusive, and 1995 to 12 January.
