HC Deb 17 January 1995 vol 252 cc421-2W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what studies have been carried out by his Department into the educational attainments of persons convicted of terrorist-type crimes in Northern Ireland.

Sir John Wheeler

It is not normal practice to conduct general studies of prisoners' attainments regardless of their convictions. However, the prior educational attainments of individual prisoners are assessed when they are being advised about the opportunities available to them during their imprisonment.

Records of examination results achieved in prisons are included each year in the annual report of the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
