HC Deb 17 January 1995 vol 252 cc428-9W
18. Mr. Kevin Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans she has to further involve the private sector in the NHS; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Sackville

The Government welcome cost-effective co-operation between the national health service and the independent sector. NHS managers and general practitioner fundholders are encouraged at a local level to seek improved quality, better value for money and best use of resources, irrespective of whether it is from the public or private sector. Such co-operation is to the advantage of patients and the NHS.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on her Department's plans to contract with the private sector to design, build and run district general hospitals.

Mr. Sackville

This is a matter for local decision.
