Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Hong Kong citizens were granted entry into the United Kingdom(a) temporarily and (b) permanently in (i) 1992 and (ii) 1993; and how many Hong Kong citizens he estimates will be granted permanent residence rights in the United Kingdom before 1997.

The information on British dependent territories citizens and British nationals (overseas) from Hong Kong given leave to enter the United Kingdom is given in the table. The numbers of such persons accepted for settlement—that is, allowed to stay indefinitely—were 1,590 in 1992 and 1,520 in 1993. No estimates have been made of the corresponding numbers up to 1997.
