HC Deb 16 January 1995 vol 252 cc294-5W
Mr. Steen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many grants the Government have given to householders affected by radon gas in each of the last five years.

Mr. Robert B. Jones

Local authorities may give grants to householders affected by radon gas but no information on the number of grants given is held centrally.

Mr. Steen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many houses in Devon are affected by radon gas; and how many have been treated.

Sir Paul Beresford

The National Radiological Protection Board estimates that some 17,000 houses in Devon have radon levels in excess of the Government action level. The Department of the Environment has provided radon measurements in response to requests from householders in approximately 58,000 homes in Devon, of which 4,150 were found to exceed the action level. The householders have been informed of their results and advised on appropriate action. It is for individual householders to decide what, if any, remedial action to take.
