To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the total value of NHS contracts with non-NHS providers in each of the last five years.

Mr. Moss

In Northern Ireland integrated health and personal social services are supplied by health boards, trusts, general practitioner fund holders and the Central Services Agency for the Health and Personal Social Services. Their total expenditure on the purchase of health and personal social services from non-NHS/HPSS providers was as follows:

(Note: these figures are still subject to audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General).

The accounts of the health and social services boards were revised in 1992–93 to take account of the separation of the purchaser-provider functions. Consequently, the financial information given is not readily available prior to this date.

Health and social services trusts and general practitioner fund-holders were established in Northern Ireland with effect from 1 April 1993, and therefore the figures for 1992–93 relate exclusively to health boards' expenditure.
