HC Deb 10 January 1995 vol 252 c121W
Sir Russell Johnston

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment she has made of research at Harvard medical school on the practice of hydrogenating vegetable oils to produce solid fats and the effect on coronary heart disease.

Mr. Sackville

The committee on medical aspects of food policy has considered the issue of hydrogenation and has examined a wide range of research evidence, including that of Harvard medical school, for its report "Nutritional Aspects of Cardiovascular Disease", copies of which will be placed in the Library. COMA has recommended that the intake of transfatty acids in the population should not increase beyond the current average and that consideration should be given to ways of decreasing the amount present in the diet.
