To ask the Secretary of State for Education what was the average teacher salary in 1979; what it is today; and how much of a real terms change this represents.

Mr. Robin Squire

The average teacher's salary in April 1979 was £5,100. In April 1994, it was £21,600. This represents a real-terms increase of 59 per cent.
