HC Deb 21 February 1995 vol 255 c116W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what arrangements are made for the waste dredged from the bed of the Clyde by Clydeport to be inspected by public agency to see if it bears any toxic substances.

Sir Hector Monro

The disposal of dredge spoil at sea is licensed by the Scottish Office Agriculture and Fisheries Department under part H of the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985. It is a condition of licensing that samples are provided to the Department's marine laboratory at Aberdeen. These are analysed for a range of substances to enable the Department to check that the spoil being disposed of conforms to agreed international standards with respect to the levels of contamination.
