HC Deb 21 February 1995 vol 255 c171W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information she has on the causes of acquired heart disease among children(a) in the United Kingdom and (b) in other countries.

Mr. Sackville

Acquired heart disease in childhood is uncommon in the United Kingdom, especially since acute rheumatic fever—historically, the main cause—has become a rare and relatively mild disease. The causes of acquired heart disease among children in other countries vary, especially in developing countries where rheumatic heart disease remains a common and significant cause of paediatric heart disease.
