The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question, pursuant to his Answer of 2 February, Official Report, Column 810, into which prison category escapes from prisons in (a) 1979, (b) 1984–85 and (c) 1993–94 figures fell; and if the escapes include escapes from escorts to prisons.The tables below show the revised figures for the escapes from Prison Service establishments and prison escorts that occurred in the calendar year 1979, the period 1 January 1984 to 31 March 1985 and for the financial year ending 31 March 1994. The figures for 1979 and 1984–85 have been revised in line with my answer to your Question F01470 I.
