Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what information her Department has of the number of independent schools which(a) opened and (b) closed in each year since 1988.

The number of independent schools which have registered with the Department upon opening, and the number which have been removed from the register because of closure, are given, for each calendar year, in the following table:
