To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many students in Scotland currently benefit from the mature students allowance.

[holding answer 13 February 1995]: In the academic year 1993–94—the latest period for which complete figures are available—the number of Scottish domiciled students qualifying for a mature students' allowance as part of their means-tested maintenance award under the students' allowances scheme was 7,272.
