To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many slaughterhouses have closed and what killing capacity by species has been taken out of commission in each year since 1985.

Our records indicate the numbers of licensed red meat slaughterhouses in England in each year since 1984 were:

  • 1984: 861
  • 1985: 852
  • 1986: 815
  • 1987: 793
  • 1988: 782
  • 1989: 689
  • 1990: 643
  • 1991: 593
  • 1992: 455
  • 1993: 434
  • 1994: 424

The Department does not hold figures on the total capacity of slaughterhouses.
