To ask the Secretary of State for Health what changes there have been in the number of general practitioners in the past decade; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Malone

The number of general medical practitioners in England rose from 23,640 at 1 October 1984 to 26,387 at 1 April 1994, an increase of 12 per cent.
