HC Deb 14 February 1995 vol 254 c604W
Ms Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how much money his Department estimates was lost through social security fraud in each year from 1990 to the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Arbuthnot

The following table details the estimated value of fraud losses prevented by Benefits Agency investigators in the four financial years since 1990–91:

Year Savings (£million)
1990–91 341
1991–92 427
1992–93 558
1993–94 654

Although the full extent of social security fraud is not known, we are examining ways of producing a reliable estimate of the sum which might be involved.
