HC Deb 07 February 1995 vol 254 c129W
Mr. Neil Hamilton

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment he has made of the justification for the setting of limits to nitrate levels in vegetables.

Mrs. Browning

I see no justification for setting limits while the EC scientific committee for food is still considering the issue. We have made it very clear to the Commission that we oppose the proposal both because no scientific case has been established for it and because of the serious effects that it would cause to our glasshouse lettuce industry. The Commission is accordingly reconsidering the matter.
