HC Deb 07 February 1995 vol 254 c176W
19. Mr. Skinner

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what, at the latest date, were the figures for unemployment; and what were the comparable figures in June 1979.

Mr. Paice

There were 2,415,500 claimant unemployed in December 1994 compared with 1,067,400 in June 1979.

26. Mr. Clelland

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what proposals he has to change the method of calculating the numbers of unemployed.

Mr. Oppenheim

There no plans at present to change the method of calculating unemployment figures derived from either the claimant count or the labour force survey. Each method complements the other and each has its own distinct advantages.
