To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people died of hypothermia other than when engaged in outdoor pursuits in(a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland in each of the past 10 years.

[holding answer 6 February 1995]There is no universally accepted definition of excess winter deaths and it would not be possible to calculate a rate for these. The total numbers of deaths by month are given in the table.

Numbers are already published regularly—in the Registrar-General's four-weekly "Vital Statistics Return", available in the Library—of total deaths with any mention of hypothermia on the death certificate. Figures for Scotland and Strahtclyde are given.
