To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total cost of all health care provided outwith the NHS in each year since 1979 at 1979 constant prices, in(a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland.

[holding answer 6 February 1995]The table has been derived from health board annual accounts and contains costs of health care purchased from the private sector by(a) health boards within the Strathclyde region area and (b) all health boards in Scotland. No figures are held centrally by the national health service for other health care provided by the private sector.
