Mr. Keen

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many accident and emergency departments there are in the United Kingdom at present; and what was the corresponding figure in each year since 1986.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many hospitals have had accident and emergency facilities in each of the last five years.

The information available is shown in the table. Since 1991–92 information has been collected on the basis of national health service trusts and directly managed units with accident and emergency facilities. Before that, information was collected on an individual hospital basis. Comparable information for earlier years is not therefore available.
