Ms Hodge

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what estimate she has made of the levels of public expenditure on education for children under school age in(a) Denmark, (b) France and (c) the United Kingdom, (i) in total, (ii) per child under school age, (iii) as a percentage of the national gross domestic product and (iv) as a percentage of total public spending in each country. [6522]

Mr. Squire

International comparisons of expenditure on early childhood education are difficult to make because of the need to ensure consistent definitions across countries. Compulsory schooling begins in the UK one year earlier than in France and two years earlier than in

Notes:

1 Recurrent and capital expenditure, but excluding loan charges.

2 Each part-time pupil is counted as 0.5 full-time equivalents.

3 Rounded to the nearest £10.

4 From 1992, includes expenditure on all pupils aged three to five. Prior to 1992. such pupils were excluded.

5 From 1992, for international comparison purposes only, the UK has regarded early childhood education as covering only pupils in maintained nursery schools and nursery classes in maintained primary schools. Prior to 1992, all pupils below compulsory school age were included in this category.
