HC Deb 19 December 1995 vol 268 c1145W
Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his reply to the third report of the Health Committee on breast cancer services, Cm 3007, what targets he has set for the number of specialist breast cancer care units. [7129]

Mr. Horam

No targets have been set for the number of specialist breast cancer units. It is for the local health authorities to determine the number of cancer units specialising in the treatment of breast cancer and where they should be situated based on the needs of their local populations.

Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will ensure that adequate resources are made available to establish the number of specialist breast care units recommended by the Health Committee in its third report of Session 1994–95, HC 324, on breast cancer services; and what plans he has to proceed with the target set out by the Committee. [7130]

Mr. Horam

National health service spending will grow by £1.3 billion in 1996–97. This will enable further improvements in cancer services to be made in line with the recommendations set out in the document "A Policy Framework for Commissioning Cancer Services", which sets out the new strategic framework for the organisation of all cancer services.
