HC Deb 18 December 1995 vol 268 cc876-7W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list for the last available year the amount of tax(a) collected and (b) uncollected for (i) PAYE, (ii) capital gains tax, (iii) corporation tax, (iv) schedule D and (v) VAT; and what were the corresponding figures for Wales, expressed also as a percentage of the overall United Kingdom tax take. [2858]

Mr. Jack

[holding answer 6 December 1995]: The amounts of PAYE, capital gains tax, corporation tax, income tax—other than PAYE—(a) collected and (b) uncollected and consequently written off as irrecoverable for the year ended 28 October 1994. the last year available, are as follows:

Tax Collected £ Remitted/written off £ million
PAYE 56[...]959 270
CGT 718 43
Corporation tax 12[...]506 262
Income tax (other than PAYE) 12[...]112 583

Separate figures for Wales in respect of these taxes are not available.

The amount of VAT collected in financial year 1994–95 was £41,817 million of which about £1,970 million or 4.7 per cent. is estimated as attributable to Wales.

The amount of VAT written off or remitted in calendar year 1994 was £550 million. In this question, "uncollected" has been defined to mean "uncollected and subsequently written off or remitted". Seventy per cent. of remissions and write-offs are attributable to the insolvency of the taxpayer; the balance represents amounts which it is not practicable or conscionable to collect.
