877WThe amount of VAT collected in financial year 1994–95 was £41,817 million of which about £1,970 million or 4.7 per cent. is estimated as attributable to Wales.
The amount of VAT written off or remitted in calendar year 1994 was £550 million. In this question, "uncollected" has been defined to mean "uncollected and subsequently written off or remitted". Seventy per cent. of remissions and write-offs are attributable to the insolvency of the taxpayer; the balance represents amounts which it is not practicable or conscionable to collect.
