§ Mr. Austin Mitchell
To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proposals he has to give compensation to British-owned fishing vessels prevented from fishing by lack of getting similar compensation to that claimed by Spanish-owned British-registered vessels for stopping fishing under the Merchant Shipping Act 1988. [4326]

§ Mr. Baldry
British-owned fishing vessels were not affected by the nationality provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act 1988. The question of compensation does not, therefore, arise.

§ Mr. Mitchell
To ask the Minister of Agriculture. Fisheries and Food what proposals he has for requiring all British registered fishing vessels to land a specified proportion of the catch into the United Kingdom. [6008]

§ Mr. Baldry
British fishing vessels are already required to land into the UK at least 50 per cent. by weight of total landings of all stocks subject to EC quota. If they fail to do this they must visit a United Kingdom port at least four times in every six month period. The visits must each be of at least eight hours duration and there must he an interval of at least 10 days between them. Notice must be given at least 24 hours in advance of a visit.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture. Fisheries and Food how many applications were received for funding under the EC grant schemes prior to 28 November for(a) fisheries processing and marketing, (b) port facilities and (c) aquaculture production for each country of the United Kingdom. [5991]

[holding answer 14 December 1995]: The number of applications and provisional applications for financial instrument for fisheries guidance (FIFG) funding under the Structures Regulation—EC Reg. 3699/93—prior to 28 November 1995 for fisheries marketing and processing, port facilities and aquaculture for each country of the United Kingdom is as follows:

¹As schemes were not open in England and Wales it was not possible for formal applications to he made. Provisional applications were acknowledged on a "without prejudice- basis.

² No formal applications have been received in Northern Ireland hut provisional approval to start work has been given to 11 processing and marketing and 4 aquaculture projects without guarantee of grant.
