Although the MRC does not currently fund applied research into diagnostic tests or treatment of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, some of the fundamental research into transmissible spongiform encephalopathies aims to improve the understanding of the pathogenesis of these disorders in man and, thus, indirectly diagnosis and treatment. The Council has funded research into transmission of spongiform encephalopathies in primates in the past but is not doing so at present.
The Council's expenditure in future years is partly dependent upon applications received, assessed and awarded in the annual competitions, and it is not possible to predict the level of spend. The council does place strategic importance on ensuring that there is high quality research in these areas.
