Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary for Defence how much his Department spent on official hospitality in 1994–95 and the financial year to date; and what is the 1995–96 projected budget for official hospitality. [5583]

Mr. Soames

During the financial year 1994–95, my Department spent £4.867 million on official hospitality, and, as at 1 November 1995, £3.099 million has been spent during the current financial year. Present forecasts indicate that approximately £4.843 million will be spent on official hospitality during financial year 1995–96. These figures include expenditure incurred by the Ministry of Defence itself, by formations and establishments of the armed forces at home and abroad, and by individual officers occupying command and international appointments for which entertainment allowances are payable.
