To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the numbers of district nurses in training and the number of health visitors in training in Scotland for each of the years between 1988 and 1995, inclusive, broken down by(a) real frequency and (b) whole-time equivalents. [3446]

Actual numbers in training as at the end of March each year are set out in the table and have been supplied by the National Board for Nursing Midwifery and Health Visiting for Scotland.

Note:

Whole-time equivalent student numbers are not available but up until 1992–93 the vast majority of students were full-time. In 1993–94 and 1994–95 just over half the students in each specialty were part-time and the remainder full-time.
