HC Deb 11 December 1995 vol 268 c511W
Mr. William O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people are currently involved in the research into pollution from fuel emissions with particular reference to the emissions of PM10s; and if he will make a statement. [3302]

Mr. Clappison

The Departments of the Environment and of Transport have established a collaborative programme of research with industry into emissions of PM10 from vehicles. The aim of the first part of the programme was to design a test methodology and a measurement programme for PM10 in vehicular exhaust. This was achieved through the participation of experts from over 25 organisations in the project, including the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, individual companies and universities. The second phase will measure the emissions of PM10 from a variety of road transport vehicles. My Department has also established a programme to measure emissions of PM10 from industrial sources. Results from both these research programmes are expected in 1996–97.
