Mr. Corbett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the estimated total cost to public funds of each housing action trust completing its agreed programmes, giving the figures(a) in total and (b) for each trust. [4828]

Sir Paul Beresford

For North Hull housing action trust, the total cost to public funds is estimated to be about £115 million. For the other trusts, the estimated costs to public funds of the housing development and/or refurbishment programmes envisaged in the studies preceding the establishment of each HAT were as follows:

Housing action trust Date established Estimated development cost £ million
Castle Vale 1993 130
Liverpool 1993 130
Stonebridge 1994 100
Tower Hamlets 1993 65–85
Waltham Forest 1992 160–170

The trusts and my Department are currently reviewing estimates of trusts' lifetimes, costs and the balance of their funding in the light of updated assessments of their housing and other regeneration activities and the scope for engaging private finance to help meet their objectives. We plan to complete these reviews during 1996–97.
