To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what facilities were available in Algeria to deal with visa applications to enter the United Kingdom in 1994; how many staff were involved; how many applications were(a) received and (b) successful for a visa to enter the United Kingdom in 1994; how many applicants were recognised as political refugees in 1994; and how many applicants were granted long stay in the United Kingdom in 1994. A full entry clearance service was available in Algeria until 18 August 1994. Since then a service has been available for diplomats and officials only. A list of entry clearance staff appears in the list:

  • 1 x full-time Entry Clearance Officer (United Kingdom-based) all year
  • 1 x full-time Entry Clearance Officer (United Kingdom-based)
  • January—September 1994
  • 1 x full-time Vice Consul spending 15 per cent. of his time as Entry Clearance Manager January—September 1994
  • 2 x LE3 (Locally Engaged) assistants all year
  • 1 x LE3 (Locally Engaged) assistant January—September 1994
