HC Deb 04 December 1995 vol 268 c59W
Sir Irvine Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what measures have been made in major cities for the provision for cycle tracks; and if he will make a statement. [3514]

Mr. Norris

Cycle facilities such as cycle lanes on the carriageway, cycle tracks away from the road, advanced stop lines at traffic lights and toucan crossings exist in most of our major cities. I hope all local highway authorities will respond positively to our initiatives to encourage cycling.

Sir Irvine Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of cycle track currently exist in the cities of(a) Birmingham, (b) Manchester, (c) Newcastle, (d) Leeds, (e) Liverpool and (f) Sheffield; and if he will make a statement. [3196]

Mr. Norris

This information is not held centrally. The responsibility for cycle facilities rests with individual local highway authorities.

Sir Irvine Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to extend the existing cycle track network in Sheffield; and if he will make a statement. [3197]

Mr. Norris

Responsibility for providing cycle facilities in Sheffield lies with Sheffield city council as the local highway authority. Proposals for cycle improvements in Sheffield were included in the south Yorkshire package bid, which is currently under consideration. I expect to make an announcement on funding shortly.
