To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost of the Prison Service in real terms in each of the last 15 years. [20385]

Landers to Mr. Mike O'Brien, dated 27 April 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about the cost of the Prison Service in real terms in each of the last 15 years. The costs of the Prison Service in England and Wales are set out in the attached table. They are at 1993–94 prices and include notional depreciation and superannuation.
