HL Deb 28 April 1995 vol 563 cc97-8WA
Lord Henderson of Brompton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they agree that Appleby Castle is one of the most important secular buildings in the north of England; and whether the National Heritage Memorial Fund has been approached about its acquisition and, if so, with what results.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of National Heritage (Viscount Astor)

The importance attached by my department to Appleby Castle is reflected in its status as a Grade I listed building. I understand that no application has been made to the National Heritage Memorial Fund for funding towards the acquisition of the castle; decisions on such funding would be a matter for the funds's trustees.
