To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of vulnerable prisoner units in prisons in England and Wales as of 24 April(a) for men and (b) for women. [20353]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 26 April 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the Office, to reply to your recent Question about the number of vulnerable prisoner units for men and women in prisons in England and Wales as of 24 April. The latest available information is for 30 June 1994, when there were 38 vulnerable prisoner units for males and three for females.
