HC Deb 26 April 1995 vol 258 c558W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current percentage of adult males who are currently unemployed or economically inactive. [20824]

Mr. Oppenheim

The latest estimates from the labour force survey for winter 1994–95 show that 34.8 per cent. of males aged 16 and over in Great Britain are ILO unemployed or economically inactive, a category which includes students, the long-term sick and disabled and retirees.

Over four out of five of the economically inactive males included in this percentage state, in reply to the LFS, that they do not want a job; many of them are aged 65 or over.
