HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 c481W
25. Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what measures she is taking to boost overall standards in schools. [19193]

Mr. Robin Squire

One of the most important forces for improving standards and raising expectations is the national curriculum and its assessment. The independent schools inspectorate has confirmed that both are already helping to raise standards. The revisions to the national curriculum approved by my right hon. Friend, which come into effect from this autumn, will continue our drive for further improvement.

Other Government policies are also aimed at higher standards, including the regular inspection of publicly funded schools, the promotion of choice for parents and of greater diversity among schools, the publication in performance tables of more information about schools' attainments, and a wider-ranging programme to raise teacher training standards.
