HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 c488W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence on what occasions his Department has paid financial compensation to individuals as a consequence of experiments carried out at Porton Down, which experiments resulted in the payment of compensation; and how much compensation was paid. [20848]

Mr. Freeman

None. In no case over the past 40 years has injury or illness been shown to have resulted from participation in studies at Porton Down.

Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will specify the total number of people who have been used in(a) radiological, (b) chemical and (c) biological experiments by his Department in each of the last 30 years. [20850]

Mr. Freeman

A small number of volunteers have taken part in ethically supervised studies, involving the low intake of short-lived radio-isotopes, over many years. The total number involved is not held centrally. The number of volunteers participating in experiments at the Chemical and Biological Defence Establishment in each of the last 30 years was set out in the answer given to the hon. Member for Leeds, Central (Mr. Fatchett) on 20 March,Official Report, column 77.
