§ Mr. FreemanBritish defence liaison staff is a term which is used in some cases to describe the office of the British defence attach' or adviser and their numbers are not identified separately from lists of attaches and advisers. In addition to those cost of living and related allowances which are received by all service men and civil servants deployed abroad, service and defence attaches and advisers are eligible for the following allowances, which are calculated, monitored and revised by the Foreign Office.

1REP SUP—Representational supplement. To meet the cost of maintaining an official residence for representational purposes.
2RAA—Representational attachment allowance. Based on half diplomatic service allowance which is paid to FCO personnel only. Paid to compensate service personnel for additional expenditure incurred while performing a representational job which is outside the normal duties of a service career.
3AIRS/DGH—Accountable indirect representational supplement/domestic and gardening help. Specifically to assist the attaché/adviser with his representational functions and commitments only.
4,5,6AIRS/CC—Accountable indirect representational supplement/child care. Costs are divided into the three categories specified—only one allowance may be claimed, depending on circumstances, for children aged under 13.
7These figures include the head of the British defence staff—the defence attaché—the head of British defence intelligence liaison staff, and nine civilians accredited as attaches.
