Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans the London fire and civil defence authority has to equip fire rescue unit appliances in the London fire brigade with geiger counter equipment. [20051]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

I am informed by the chief fire officer that fire rescue units, of which there are six strategically located across London, are currently equipped with radiation detection devices based on the geiger principle.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action has been taken by the London fire and civil defence authority to implement the recommendations of the Hidden inquiry report into the 1988 Clapham rail disaster as regards the London fire brigade. [20047]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

I am informed by chief fire officer that eight of the 93 recommendations resulting from the investigation into the Clapham Junction railway accident conducted by Mr. Anthony Hidden QC had implications for the London fire and civil defence authority and that all these recommendations have been met.
