HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 cc431-2W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of Kenya about arrests of opposition members of Parliament. [19908]

Mr. Baldry

We have made clear to the Kenyan authorities at the highest level our concerns at the arrest of opposition members of Parliament, and the damage such actions do to Kenya's image in the international community.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will support the representations made to the Government of Kenya by the American ambassador in Nairobi about the arrest of six trustees of the Mzangaza Trust. [19910]

Mr. Baldry

Our high commission in Nairobi contacted the Kenyan authorities at a high level to register our strong concern at these arrests as soon as they heard the news. The six trustees were released shortly thereafter.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if the views expressed in the Catholic bishops' recent pastoral letter in Kenya are in accord with the reports he receives from the high commission in Nairobi. [19928]

Mr. Baldry

We receive regular reports from our high commission in Nairobi. They cover various issues including those raised in the Catholic bishops' recent pastoral letter. We have noted the concerns expressed by the bishops, many of which are widely shared.
