HC Deb 24 April 1995 vol 258 c341W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Attorney-General what percentage of charges prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service has resulted in conviction in each of the years of the Crown Prosecution Service's existence.

The Attorney-General

Crown Prosecution Service records are based on the number of defendants whose case results in a conviction, rather than the number of charges resulting in conviction.

Since 1987, expressed as a proportion of all defendants whose case proceeded to a hearing, the percentage convicted in magistrates court proceedings has been 97 per cent. each year. In the Crown court, the percentage was 91 per cent. between 1987 and 1991, and 90 per cent. thereafter.
