19. Mr. John Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to deregulate betting and gaming. [18373]

29. Mrs. Lait

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to deregulate betting and gaming. [18383]

Mr. Michael Forsyth

We are reviewing the controls on gambling as part of the Government's deregulation initiative.

We have made a number of changes to the law relating to small lotteries and the football pools and have removed certain restrictions on betting shop facilities. In addition, Sunday racing with on and off-course betting was introduced in January

Earlier this month, we laid a draft deregulation order before Parliament to relax restrictions on betting at greyhound tracks. We have also gone out to consultation on proposals for an all-cash amusement-with-prizes machine in adult premises, including betting shops.

Finally, we have to consult in the next few months on proposals on casino and bingo gaming, which will also include a review of the restrictions on the advertising of commercial gambling.
