HC Deb 19 April 1995 vol 258 c149W
30. Mr. Booth

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what he can do to encourage high standards of urban design and ensure new developments enhance urban landscapes. [17935]

Mr. Gummer

I will shortly launch a national campaign to promote consideration of urban design and its contribution to the quality of the built environment. The campaign will focus on specific sites where development is anticipated, and will help to assess how greater attention to urban design issues can help to ensure new development fits successfully into the existing built environment.

The urban design campaign is an example of action stemming from my Department's initiative "Quality in Town and Country" which seeks to encourage debate and stimulate ideas about what Government and others can do to help achieve quality in the built environment, in city, town and village.
