HC Deb 18 April 1995 vol 258 c61W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many cases of Aujeskys disease were reported in each year since 1985. [17810]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

One case of Aujesky's disease was reported in Wales in 1988.

Mr. Morley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many cases of blue tongue were reported in each year since 1980. [17815]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

No cases of blue tongue have occurred in Wales since 1 June 1991. This disease only became notifiable on that date and official records prior to that were not collected, although I am not aware that there has ever been a case of this disease in Great Britain.

Notes:

1. One of the GPs erased from the Register in 1994 currently has an appeal against the Professional Conduct Committee's direction pending.

2. These figures have not been validated.

Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, what plans he has to review the situation whereby general practitioners struck from the register of the General Medical Council for serious professional misconduct might continue to practice while considering an appeal; and if he will make a statement. [18098]

Mr. Richards

The General Medical Council is an independent statutory body whose constitution and functions are regulated by the Medical Act 1983. Adequate powers already exist to ensure that practitioners shall remain suspended from the register during the appeal process in circumstances where the GMC is satisfied that this is necessary for the protection of members of the public or would be in the best interest of the doctor. The way in which those powers are exercised is entirely a matter for the GMC.
